Where the economics change

This is the work that never gets approved in California.

Teak decks, varnish and joinery are labour, not materials. A deck replacement quoted in a Southern California yard is dominated by hours, which is exactly why so many owners defer it year after year until the caulk lets go, water tracks into the core, and a finish job turns into a structural one.

This is the single service where the Ensenada arithmetic is most dramatic — the same hand work, by trades who have been doing it for generations, at a labour cost that makes the project approvable instead of theoretical. It's the most common reason a boat comes down here for one job and leaves with three done.

What finish work covers

Deck, brightwork, and interior.

Get a scope & estimate
01

Teak deck replacement

Full or partial deck replacement, laid and fastened correctly, with the substrate inspected and repaired before a single plank goes down.

02

Caulking & seam repair

Seam removal, preparation and re-caulking — the maintenance that decides whether your deck lasts another decade or lets water into the core.

03

Brightwork & varnish

Toe rails, cap rails, hatches and trim stripped, prepared and built up in multiple coats for depth rather than a quick shine.

04

Interior joinery & cabinetry

Cabinetry repair and new joinery in matched timber, from a single locker through to a full interior refit.

05

Soles, headliners & panels

Cabin soles, headliners and interior panelling repaired or renewed, including the access improvements you'll thank yourself for later.

06

Synthetic deck systems

Where synthetic makes more sense than teak, supplied and laid with the pattern, colour and caulk line you specify.

How a yard period runs

Four stages, substrate to final coat.

Finish work is judged by eye from a metre away, so every stage exists to make the last one look effortless.

STAGE 01

Survey & substrate

What's under the teak or the varnish is assessed first — because laying new work over a wet or failed substrate wastes the entire job.

STAGE 02

Scope & material

A written scope with timber, pattern, caulk and finish selected and confirmed with you before anything is ordered or removed.

STAGE 03

Fit & build

Deck laid or joinery built and fitted under supervision, with photo documentation as it progresses.

STAGE 04

Finish & handover

Caulking, sanding and finish coats built up, then a final inspection with you before the boat goes back in.

FAQ

What owners ask about teak and joinery.

How much cheaper is a teak deck here than in California?+
Meaningfully, because the cost is almost entirely labour — but we won't quote a percentage sight-unseen. Send photos and your deck dimensions and you'll get a real number to compare against your California quote.
Do you replace the whole deck or can you do sections?+
Both. Partial replacement makes sense when the substrate is sound and the damage is localised. What we won't do is lay new teak over a core that's taking water — the survey stage exists to tell you which situation you're in.
What about synthetic teak?+
We supply and lay synthetic systems too, with the pattern, colour and caulk line you choose. For some owners and some use cases it's the better decision, and we'll say so.
How long does brightwork take to build up properly?+
Varnish depth comes from multiple coats with proper preparation and cure between each — it isn't a job that can be compressed into a weekend without showing. The timeline goes in your scope document up front.
Can you match existing interior timber?+
Yes. Send photos of the existing joinery and we'll confirm the match before committing to material, so new work doesn't announce itself next to the original.
Is it worth bringing the boat down just for carpentry?+
Often it is — but owners usually bundle. A yard period covering teak plus paint or a haul-out is a single trip and a single set of lay days, which is where the real saving compounds.
